What's to see in the Akaroa Harbour?
This colourful poster enlightens you about the special scenery around the harbour and what unique sightings you can see.

Akaroa; South Island variant of 'Whangaroa'
meaning 'Long Harbour'. Originally spelt 'Hakaroa'.

This 17 km-long harbour was formed 7 million years ago by a volcanic explosion centered from Onawe, part of the now inactive Banks Peninsula volcano.

Today, the harbour showcases distinctive sediment layers, creating unique formations and caves. Its nutrient-rich soil and sheltered environment make it an ideal habitat for thriving nature and wildlife both on land and underwater.
